What is Audiology?

The discipline of Audiology involves the evaluation, treatment, and conservation of the hearing and/or balance systems of the human audio-vestibular system. Specially trained health care professionals known as audiologists provide this care. Audiologists can function individually or as part of a health care team and use their professional skills to improve the quality of life for each patient.

As primary hearing health providers, Audiologists can make referrals to or receive referrals from Ear, Nose and Throat physicians (Otolaryngologists). Audiologists use specialized equipment to evaluate and identify hearing and balance function in patients from birth through adulthood. Based upon the diagnosis, the Otolaryngologist can present a variety of treatment options to patients with hearing impairment or balance problems. The Audiologist can often assist the Otolaryngologist in determining appropriate treatment options by combining a comprehensive history with a variety of highly specialized auditory and/or vestibular (balance) assessments. Audiologists dispense and fit hearing aids as part of a larger, overall comprehensive (re)habilitative program that can include, but is not limited to, auditory training and tinnitus suppression treatment.
