Letter from the Chairman
May 2009: Anil K. Lalwani, MD, Mendik Foundation Professor of Otolaryngology and Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology, will be stepping down as chair of the department to devote himself full-time to his research and the care of patients. He has graciously agreed to continue in his current role while a national search is conducted for his successor. Read the announcement from Dean and CEO Robert I. Grossman, MD
The Department of Otolaryngology at New York University Langone Medical Center is one of the premier Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery programs in the country, delivering state-of-the-art patient care, performing innovative research, and providing superb training in Otolaryngology and its subspecialties. In addition to NYU Langone Medical Center, we hold close affiliation with Bellevue Hospital, VA Medical Center, Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital.
Clinically, the faculty of the department enjoy a national and international reputation for providing the highest quality and the state-of-the-art patient care in all areas of Otolaryngology: facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, general otolaryngology, head and neck surgery and oncology, otology, neurotology, skull base surgery, pediatric otolaryngology, rhinology, laryngology, and professional voice. We are home of the premier NYU Cochlear Implant Center, which is notable for many firsts, including the first center to implant a multichannel cochlear implant and auditory brainstem implant in the Northeast. In early 2004, the program was the first to reach the milestone of having implanted 1000 patients!
We are also recognized for our cutting edge clinical and basic science research in head and neck cancer, auditory and vestibular neuroscience, cochlear implantation, speech and voice sciences, dysphagia, molecular genetics and gene therapy. Our world renowned scientists have made seminal contributions that have enhanced care of patients with diseases of the ear, nose and throat.
Not surprisingly, the outstanding clinical and basic science enterprise in the department and at NYU School of Medicine offers an outstanding environment for training medical students and residents. In addition, we offer fellowships in two areas: Otology and Neurotology and Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery. The training environment at NYU Langone Medical Center is rich in its diversity of patient population, variety of hospital environments and the quality of its basic science and clinical faculty.
In summary, the Department of Otolaryngology at NYU Langone Medical Center succeeds in providing the most compassionate care, performing innovative research and training the leaders of tomorrow.
